De Haar is the largest castle in the Netherlands, rebuilt in 1892 for the Rothschild-van Zuylen family with towers, moats and a park designed to impress. We reach it along the river Vecht, past the summer estates of the Amsterdam merchants. The afternoon is for Utrecht: the Dom tower, the double-level canals with their wharf cellars, and a city that many visitors prefer to Amsterdam for its calm.
