The classic half day out of Amsterdam, done properly. Your chauffeur collects you at your hotel and drives the quiet road north to Zaanse Schans, where the windmills still turn and the cheese is still made by hand. From there it is twenty minutes to the fishing harbour of Volendam, with time for a stroll along the dike and a plate of smoked eel or a coffee on the water, before the causeway to Marken and its green wooden houses.
Every stop is yours to shorten or stretch. Back in Amsterdam by early afternoon, or ask your chauffeur to carry on to Edam.
